WANT TO BE A GREAT SONGWRITER? HERE ARE SOME TIPS…
On today’s music sense Monday, we will be highlighting some helpful tips that could help you write some of the greatest songs in time.
Not many have understood the rudiments of songwriting neither do they place value on it. Songwriting is a deliberate way of making music, that not only has lyrics or harmony but is well structured and passes a message the way it should. Sometimes ‘freestyles’ can make as much rave and money as some properly written songs. Not that freestyles are a bad thing, but it doesn’t just work for everyone and songwriting is a skill every artist should have.
Here are a few tips to help you write great songs:
Be Inspired
One of the first and most important things is to get inspired. Inspiration can be found in anything. As a musician, you should know what and how you get inspired. For some, it’s the environment, for some – it’s the sound (beat), for some drinks. Regardless of what it is, you must learn to harness it.
Your Message
Upon inspiration, you have to decide on what you are writing about. What message are you trying to pass? What is your objective? You’ve got to be sure about what you are trying to pass across. Your emotion is a strong tool to utilize in this stage. It helps you garner words that are more appealing and can connect better with your listeners.
Hook / Chorus
Also, ensure that the hook or chorus to your song is very catchy, one that sticks at first listen. The essence of this is to retain the attention of your listeners through the song.
Write Down Your Ideas
During the songwriting process, several ideas would come through your mind. Could be song titles, lyrics, bars, message etc. Don’t just let these ideas slip away, rather, pen them down. They could be useful, if not in that project, in subsequent projects.
Take Creative Breaks
While writing, it’s possible you get stuck on a verse or line, you should take a break. Do something different that refreshes your mind. You could take a walk, play games, sleep or whatever.
Revise Your Songs
Many times, it’s not enough to pen down your idea once and close the books on it. You should make it a habit to go through your works; make edits and effects corrections and improve the quality of your work. It limits the flaws in your work.
