As we look forward to tonight’s winner of the 2019 Ballon d’Or award, it is important you know that one of the greatest players to ever grace a football pitch made a mistake that he is currently paying for.

Cristiano Ronaldo has won every trophy available in football at Senior level except the FIFA World Cup.

While many might think that is his greatest mistake ever, I hate to break it to you that it isn’t.

There are loads of fantastic players and legends who never placed their hands on the World Cup trophy in their prime.

Few examples are Oliver Kahn, Pavel Nedved, Luis Figo, Eusebio, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, Davor Suker, Rui Costa and David Beckham.

From his days at Sporting Lisbon to making that career-changing move to the Theatre of Dreams, the Portuguese Superstar has always been an exceptional player even at a tender age.

Playing under the tutelage of Sir Alex Ferguson as Manager of Manchester United helped shape his future as he went on to win his first Champions League with the Manchester side and his first Ballon d’Or award in 2008.

Upon leaving Manchester United for Spanish Giants Real Madrid, he stepped up his game helping The Galacticos win 4 UEFA Champions League trophies between 2014 and 2018.

Within 2013 and 2017, he won the Ballon d’Or 4 more times to equal Lionel Messi’s tally of 5.

His time at Real Madrid was laden with individual and continental honors. He won the La Liga, Copa Del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup and the UEFA Champions League with the Madrid side.

He also emerged the Club’s all-time goalscorer pipping Legends Raul Gonzalez and Alfredo Di Stefano who once held the record.

In 2016, he led Portugal to win the European Competition, defeating hosts France 1-0 in the final game.

HIS GREATEST MISTAKE
Months after winning the 2018 UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo shocked the world of football. He signed for Italian giants Juventus FC ending speculation that he was staying put at Real Madrid.

Cristiano Ronaldo‘s greatest mistake was leaving Real Madrid in his prime. He and that Real Madrid team were a match made in Heaven.

Since joining Juventus FC in the Serie A last season, Ronaldo has been a shadow of himself. His goalscoring ratio has dwindled drastically.

After an impressive display against Atletico Madrid, his team were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by a young Ajax FC side.

This season, he has struggled to replicate the form that saw him score 21 Serie A goals last season. His form under M. Sarri is one that calls for concern.

I say boldly that his greatest mistake cost him last year’s 2018 Ballon d’Or award and it is set to cost him again today.

I strongly believe Lionel Messi will win the 2019 Ballon d’Or given his fantastic form in the past 11 months. Just last night, he was the difference when Barcelona took on Atletico Madrid scoring the only goal of the game in the 86th minute.

Ronaldo, on the other hand, isn’t a strong contender this year as he hasn’t been able to fit into the Juventus side.

Ronaldo is driven and always wants to win. Him not winning at least a Ballon d’Or award in 2 years shows that something is wrong.

I’m a Ronaldo fan but the truth has to be said. Leaving Real Madrid was the greatest mistake of his career and I want to believe he knows that too.
